Davi Rodrigues - Artistic Director / Resident Choreographer / Contemporary

Originally from Brazil, Lamondance Artistic Director Davi Rodrigues is proud to be a Canadian Citizen. Prior to joining Lamondance, Davi distinguished himself both as a dancer for many years and as a visionary young choreographer for nearly a decade. He brings high energy and optimism to his work, having made a name for himself on the basis of an audacious, immersive dance approach, unique choreography, and daring hard work.

While in Brazil, Davi studied Physical Education at the Universidade Católica de Brasília (UCB). He worked as a professional dancer for six years with the Aplauso Cia de Dança under Junior O'Hara's direction in Taguatinga, DF. Furthermore, he studied classical ballet under the guidance of Heloisa Almeida, principal dancer at Ballet Theatre Guaira. Davi's talent for creating exceptional experiences was cultivated in Brazil, where he choreographed eight original full-length dance shows and garnered numerous awards during his 15-year tenure as director and dancer for Cia Criatividança. His influential work has left a global impact.

Since moving to Vancouver in 2008, Davi has ascended from dancer and guest choreographer to the roles of Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer of Lamondance Company. His pivotal role in Lamondance's incorporation into Lamondance Arts Society in 2019 reflects his significant impact.

Davi's passion and drive have been instrumental in positioning Lamondance Company as a premier training program for emerging dancers in Vancouver. With a focus on ambitious choreography and comprehensive artistic development, the program serves as a formidable launchpad for young artists, fostering connections with Canadian and international artists and creating a significant network within the community.

Davi has contributed over 20 original works to Lamondance throughout its 16-year history. Notable creations include "Garden of Lights Marble," "IELE" (in collaboration with Emmy-nominated composer Hal Beckett), "How It Ends," "Behind the Veil," "Black Feather," and "Before Dawn," which were showcased at the Vancouver and Toronto international dance festivals.

Davi's choreography has been featured at renowned Vancouver dance schools such as Arts Umbrella, Pacific Dance Arts, Kirkwood Academy of Performance and Arts, and RNB Dance & Theatre, garnering awards from festivals in Vancouver and the United States.

Davi's commitment to community impact led to the creation of the Lamondance and Friends Gala, which unites the local dance community and fosters a dialogue about dance. Showing strong leadership skills from a young age, Davi holds leadership positions globally. As a Mentor, Judge, and Choreographer, he is highly regarded at the International Dance Seminar in Brasília, Brazil. He has served on the artistic committee for Vancouver's Royal City Youth Ballet.

Davi's success stems from his unique style, unwavering optimism, and generous spirit. As a dedicated mentor, he supports, educates, and challenges artists to grow. Committed to artistic excellence, he shares his wealth of experience with performers, choreographers, and arts educators in the community.
