A Message from the Artistic Director

A Message From The Artistic Director…

Welcome and thank you for coming to our show, Skin Within. I am excited to bring eight incredible creations to this program with the unique, bold and daring new choreographic works by guest choreographers Noam Gagnon, Alexis Fletcher, Nicolas Ventura, Richard Walters, Dance//Novella and myself as part of our celebratory season.

Creativity is our DNA. For the past 13 years, Lamondance has created an inclusive creative space where emerging artists can explore, learn and share their artistic voices, providing them with the tools necessary to navigate the world to become professional dance artists.

Skin Within invites you into eight different choreographic voices; each will take you on a different path, opening doors to different worlds investigating teams such as memories, communication and intention, miscommunication, multiverse theory, children's curiosity, relationships, farewells, and life transformations, all elements embroidered deep in our Skin. Eight masterpieces together set the future for this remarkable company we call Lamondance.

Lamondance has produced 14 remarkable shows performed in Vancouver and around the world. Last April, the launch of our professional dance company was presented throughout our full-length show Black Feather, receiving incredible reviews from our audience members. Because of shows like Black Feather, our company exists, offering possibilities of change; these opportunities have transformed the lives of so many dancers and choreographers, creating our identity in our community.

It has been a pleasure to evolve Lamondance's voice over the past years. I want to share my love and gratitude to all of you that have been here throughout our journey and all that have helped Lamondance become what it is today - A possibility of change, an opportunity for the future and certainty for creativity.

Enjoy the show!

Davi Rodrigues / Artistic Director of Lamondance

PROGRAM ACT II

"summoning" is an exploration about urgently calling upon the act of the state of being present, listening to what is brought to the surface from within oneself.

Music: Stefan Nazarevich

6 - to which you have turned (13 min)

World Premiere, June 2022

7 - Gone too soon (11 min.)

Performed by Training Program

World Premiere, June 2022

Gone too soon is a study on reflection and loss. The characters of the work are manipulated by the world around them but also unknowingly follow paths that they have already experienced. Inspired by the multiverse theory, D//N wanted to explore what it would feel like to be encircled by the infinite ways of living through unchangeable events while illuminating the possibility of change.

Choreography by Dance//Novella

Costumes: Racheal Prince

Music: Brandon Alley - Original Score

Character A: Izel Pienaar

Lost time

Lost you

Lost are we

Gone too soon

The body aches

The wind chills

The sun drapes everyone in cheap thrills

We

We

We

You

Nothing

something New

All else fails

Back to the nails

Chew, Chew, Chew

Gone too soon

Chew, Chew Through

Blood red

Body blue

Gone too soon

Character B: Bryn Bridgen

Hello?

Who is this?

I’m sorry, I can’t hear you, would you please speak up?

Is this some sort of joke?

Stop fooling around! I have other things to do with my life.

I’m hanging up now.

Goodbye.

Final voice: Isla Spotswood

What comes from nothing can never be denied. There is no once. There is no void.

There is everything, eternally.

We are not here for the first time.

We’ve already been here in our respective moments an infinite number of times.

We’ve been in variations of these moments, and all possible progressions. We’ve lived this life and all we might have. We will do the same again, infinitely.

We are blessed that we do not remember.

Even in this life we do not remember everything.

But we know it was us.

Is, was, will be.

8 - Behind the veil - excerpt (14 min)

Performed by Training program

World Premiere, April 2022

What if we get stuck in our past?

Lost in memories that made us what we are now.

Memories of joy and sorrow, a joyous and magical feeling.

Let me dance freely, facing the moment when my fears and dreams will collide.

Someone I am is waiting for courage.

I remember days so long in the past

when I wished I would grow up so fast.

Choreography and costumes by Davi Rodrigues

Music: DJ Mayhem, Radical Face and Secret Garden
