A Message from the Artistic Director

Davi Rodrigues / Artistic Director

A Message From The Artistic Director…

Welcome, and thank you for joining us for our season finale, "From Dust." I am thrilled to present this heartfelt collaboration, which honours our artistic roots and the journey we continue to embark on.

"From Dust" showcases the unique perspectives of guest choreographers Kirsten Wicklund, Cristina Bucci, Heather Dotto, and my own contributions. Together, we weave a beautiful tapestry of reminiscence and renewal that reflects our shared narrative.

This performance serves as a gentle ode to our origins, embracing our essence and illuminating a pathway toward a future filled with creativity and possibility. It is a poignant exploration of identity and unity, celebrating the enduring spirit of artistic expression at Lamondance.

As we mark the conclusion of our 16th season, we celebrate the incredible accomplishments of our dancers. At Lamondance, each dancer is recognized as a unique individual with remarkable potential, rather than just a number.

Thank you for your continued support in helping us cultivate a nurturing space where talent can grow and flourish.

Enjoy the show!

Davi Rodrigues / Artistic Director of Lamondance

Program

Welcoming Music by Murray Grant

1 - Garden of Lights (18 min)

World Premiere, July 2016, Brasília, Brazil, at the International Dance Seminar.

There was a last hour, a last minute, a last second when 2,977 stars went dark.

Inspired by the photo ‘Garden of Lights’ by Pierre David and Sean Corriel, this idea was proposed by Jessica Kmetovic for the 09/11 Memorial in New York and combined with the book ‘The Power of Now’ by Eckhart Tolle. Garden of Lights holds the promise of leading us to a spiritual awakening of our best and highest selves, helping us reflect the energy of true transformation as we learn that life is short, and there is no time for hate.

A nation that still stands after this tragedy.

2 - A Most Dominant Wavelength (13 min)

World Premiere, May 2019

My sighs are blown away, my salt tears gone,

Mine eyes are turned to fire, my heart to lead;

Heavy heart's lead, melt at mine eyes' red fire!

So shall I die by drops of hot desire.

- William Shakespeare

Together, the dancers and I have taken inspiration from ideas surrounding; conversation starters, farewells, crowds, first meetings, cheer, anticipation, solitary, and illusion. We have explored these ideas through various physical links that investigate the human ritual of celebration.

Choreography by Kirsten Wicklund, in collaboration with the dancers.

Intermission (15 min)

Intermission music by Murray Grant

4 - Algocracy (16 min)

Premiere 2025

Algocracy is a governance system in which computer-coded algorithms structure, constrain, incentivize, nudge, manipulate or encourage different types of human behaviour.

This work explores the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence and the unknown consequences standing before us. We are at a precipice of radical change with a possible future where machines become indistinguishable from humans—mirroring human cognition, emotional depth, and movement. As AI progresses, this work raises critical questions about preserving empathy, connection, and collaboration in a world teetering between the organic and inorganic. It serves as a warning about the profound ways technology is reshaping and transforming the human experience.

A heartfelt thank you to the dancers for inspiring me throughout this creation process and their dedication to the work. A special thank you to Davi Rodrigues for his unwavering support and for providing me with the space to explore and bring my ideas to life.

Choreography by Cristina Bucci in collaboration with the Dancers.

5 - Nothing Really Matters (22 min)

Premiere 2025

Choreography and costumes by Davi Rodrigues

Music: Ramin Djawadi, Volker Bertelmann with sound mixing by Davi Rodrigues

Lighting Designer: Jamie Sweeney

Through the lens of an anxiety attack, the piece confronts the illusion of control over the future, urging us to release our fears surrounding unfulfilled dreams. Just like the changing elements of nature, where much that once was is lost, life flows inevitably like sands in an hourglass. It is a gentle reminder that the only time we truly possess is the now.

Here, we celebrate the beauty found in simply being, discovering freedom in the present moment while letting go of what cannot be held.

“The world has changed.

I see it in the water.

I feel it in the Earth.

I smell it in the air.

Much that once was is lost,

For none now live who remember it.”

― J.R.R. Tolkien
